History. Hamburg steak has been known as "Frikadelle" in Germany since the 17th century. The "Hamburger Rundstück" was popular already in 1869 and is believed to be a precursor to the modern Hamburger. Cheeseburger (with onions and tomatoes) at Louis' Lunch, New Haven, Connecticut.
In 1974, The New York Times published a story about Louis' Lunch claiming to have invented the hamburger. The U.S. Library of Congress' American Folklife Center Local Legacies Project website credits Louis' Lunch as the maker of America's first hamburger and steak sandwich.
