The Hampton House Motel, now operating as Historic Hampton House Motel museum and cultural center, is a historic former lodging facility in the Brownsville neighborhood of Miami, Florida. The motel served Black patrons during segregation in the American South. It was designated as a National Historic Landmark in February 2023. [1]
The Historic Hampton House is the only Green Book museum in the world dedicated to sharing this unique experience of the segregated era. The restoration and vision are clear and intentional. The Hampton House is a valuable piece of Miami’s black history and it’s the only segregated hotel of that era still standing today. It holds architectural significance as an example of the Miami Modern style.
The Hampton House was among the most modern and upscale facilities available to Blacks in Miami before desegregation. And in an era when hospitals, schools, and beaches were segregated, the Hampton House was open to people of all races.
Meet the founder. Dr. Enid Pinkney. In 2015, The Historic Hampton House started its restoration of the Miami Green Book motel on a $6 million budget, thanks to the efforts of the preservationist Dr. Enid Pinkney’s single-minded focus.
Miami’s Historic Hampton House is located at 4240 NW 27th Ave, Miami, FL 33142 and provides on-site parking in a gated lot directly behind the building. The Historic Hampton House can be accessed from major highways I-95, I-195, and I-395.
