There are 27 bones within the wrist and hand. The wrist itself contains eight small bones, called carpals . The carpals join with the two forearm bones, the radius and ulna , forming the wrist joint.
The skeleton of the hand, wrist and forearm consists of 29 bones (diagram 1). The 2nd and 3rd metacarpals (MC) and the distal row of the carpus are the fixed elements of the hand. This promotes stability for grip. The phalanges and the 4th and 5th Metacarpals are the mobile part of the hand and allow grasping around objects.
