Ranged weapons have disadvantage in melee (i.e 5ft) range. For a lightcrossbow, you attack normally from 10ft to 80ft. Anything outside that range, up to 320ft, is at disadvantage; where 325ft and beyond is an automatic miss.
You can walk down a dungeon corridor with a hand crossbow at the ready in one hand, and a shield upon the other. You see enemies at range, you can: Action: fire. no action cost: Drop the crossbow. Free item interaction: draw your sword. Move: to enemy (optional)
If you have crossbow expert the hand crossbow is no more viable in close combat than the heavy one. However, the hand crossbow is a better choice because of the extra bonus actipon attack.
50 gp - 1d10 piercing - 18 lbs. - Ammunition (range 100/400), heavy, loading, two-handed. The stats for the Hand Crossbow are reasonably accurate, they are fairly quick to reload. However the stats for Light Crossbow and Heavy Crossbow are woefully wrong. Not just "inaccurate", just plain wrong.
