Here is the ending to the movie with the freeze-frame of Harold's car going over the cliff edited out. I LOVE this movie but I absolutely cringe every time ...
Devastated after learning of Maude's death, Harold speeds down a country road and sends his car off a seaside cliff. Following the crash, Harold stands calmly atop the cliff, holding his banjo. After gazing down at the wreckage, he plucks the banjo strings and dances away to "If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out".
Final Scene -- Harold drives to the ocean and demonstrates his understanding... Harold takes Highway 280, then is seen on Highway 92 (near The House of Doors), then to Pescadero Road, where he swerves onto Highway 1 and heads north. The spot where the car goes off the cliff is in Pacifica, near Mori Point.
