They have been diagnosed at the UCSF Pediatric Brain Center by neurologists who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of headache disorders in children and adolescents.
Headaches are becoming more common among school children. At present, 66% to 71% of 12- to 15-year-olds have at least one headache every three months, and 33% to 40% have at least one per week. Headache is often accompanied by other physical and/or emotional manifestations.
This leaflet offers information about headache in children and young people. If you have any further questions or concerns, please speak to the staff member in charge of your child’s care. What is headache and why has my child got it? Headaches are very common. Almost all of us will have had one.
What is headache? Headaches affect people of all ages – many adults remember having headaches as children. Headache in children can occur on its own (primary disorder) or as a result of another condition. Primary headache disorders include migraine and tension type headache. The most common primary headache disorder is migraine without aura.
Symptom Management: Allow student to go to nurse/health office as soon as his/her headache or aura starts. Allow student to rest for up to 30 minutes before returning to class. Allow light-sensitive student to wear dark glasses for a few hours when pain is severe.
