• Red meat can be an important element of a healthy diet, particularly at specific life stages. • Excess consumption of red meat and processed meat is associated with increased risk of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). • Current health recommendations suggest that red meat consumption should be between 98 g and 500 g per week for adults.
1 Μαΐ 2022 · Overall, a message to keep eating meat was constructed through the delineation of potential risks of low intake and emphasis on the benefits of red meat, with little acknowledgement of health harms, and reassurance that healthier meats can be chosen.
Here, we conducted a systematic review and implemented a meta-regression-relaxing conventional log-linearity assumptions and incorporating between-study heterogeneity-to evaluate the relationships between unprocessed red meat consumption and six potential health outcomes.
The evidence-based integrated message is that it is plausible to conclude that high consumption of red meat, and especially processed meat, is associated with an increased risk of several major chronic diseases and preterm mortality. Production of red meat involves an environmental burden.
Despite many studies reporting an association between red meat and the risk of CVD and colon cancer, several methodological limitations and inconsistencies were identified which may impact on the validity of their findings.
