27 Ιουν 2022 · Pulsatile tinnitus is a rare form of tinnitus. People who have pulsatile tinnitus hear noise that may be loud or soft but often happens in time with their heartbeats.
Many cases of pulsatile tinnitus can be traced to stenosis in one of the large veins in the brain, most commonly the traverse and sigmoid sinuses. The narrowing of the veins causes a disturbance in the blood flow, contributing to the whooshing sounds of pulsatile tinnitus.
The benefits of surgery to close a hole in the eardrum include preventing water from getting in the middle ear (the part of the ear behind the eardrum). This reduces the chance of infection and stops the ear from leaking discharge. This surgery can be done as part of a mastoid operation (see our separate leaflet on mastoid surgery).
