Where an Arabic word and a Hebrew word share a common origin the s and sh sounds are often swapped, for example shemesh, שֶׁמֶשׁ, and shams, شَمْس. This table shows letters aligned according to pronunciation whereas shows their historical alignment.
21 Νοε 2009 · The Arabic cognate of Hebrew Makom is just مقام, not مكان. The Hebrew word uses qof (ق) not kaf (ك). The only parts where the correspondences are "weird" are with the fricatives, especially س ش ص ظ ث etc which overlap with different Hebrew consonants historically.
