Hedingham Castle in Essex, England dates from shortly after the Norman Conquest of 1066. It was built by Aubrey de Vere, one of William I's barons, who chose the location from the extensive lands granted by the king in lieu of services provided.
Hedingham Castle is a large, probably late C11 ringwork castle surviving as upstanding, earthwork and buried remains. It sits on a natural spur of land overlooking the northern bank of the River Colne. Within the castle mound, or ringwork, which is located on the tip of the spur, is a mid-C12 stone tower Keep (listed at Grade I).
