Helen Keller was both blind and deaf. But despite these disabilities, she became a skilled writer and speaker. Helen Adams Keller was born on June 27, 1880, in Tuscumbia, Alabama. When she was 19 months old, she got very sick. The disease left her unable to see or hear. When Helen was 6, she got a teacher named Anne Sullivan.
Through viewing a video about Helen Keller’s life, examining a 1904 photograph of Keller, and reading excerpts of her autobiography, students will learn about Helen Keller’s commitment to advocating for equal treatment for people with disabilities.
