The Helsinki Synagogue , famous for its Byzantine-style dome, was built by architect Jac Ahrenberg in 1906. Twenty years later it was extended. Since then, it can accommodate up to 600 people, seated around the bimah which occupies the center and above which there is a magnificent chandelier.
Helsinki Synagogue. Malminkatu 26, 00100 Helsinki. The Jewish Community in Helsinki is one of the most northern Jewish communities in the world. It is located in Kamppi neighbourhood in the heart of Helsinki. The synagogue was inaugurated in 1906 and the community centre in 1961.
Helsinki Synagogue. In 1900, the city of Helsinki gave a plot to the Jewish community on which to build a synagogue on Malminkatu Street in Kamppi. The area had been settled by Jews when the Jewish market selling old clothes known as the narinkka moved to the Simonkenttä Field nearby.
The Helsinki synagogue (1906) is Modern Orthodox, the building itself of international, eclectic architecture common for 19th century synagogues in Central Europe and England. The building forms part of an interesting final point in the stylistic development of traditional synagogue building.
