Behind its attention-grabbing words is a major public health problem: excessive use of alcohol by college students. The legal drinking age in the United States is 21, but heavy drinking by underage college students and by those who are age 21 or older is widespread, dangerous, and disruptive.
First, there was a continuity of heavy alcohol use from high school to college in students who joined fraternities. Second, fraternity members seemed to seek out heavy drinking environments, thus self-selecting into the fraternity system.
Harmful and underage college drinking are significant public health problems, and they exact an enormous toll on the lives of students on campuses across the United States. Drinking at college has become a ritual that students often see as an integral part of their higher education experience.
College drinking and its negative consequences remain a major public health concern. Yet many prevention efforts targeting college drinkers are expensive, are difficult to implement, use indicated approaches targeting only high-risk drinkers, and/or are only marginally effective.
