Higher and lower calorific values (heating values) for fuels like coke, oil, wood, hydrogen and others. Energy content or calorific value is the same as the heat of combustion , and can be calculated from thermodynamical values , or measured in a suitable apparatus:

30 Ιαν 2024 · The higher heating value, which often correlates with the API gravity, is roughly 11,000 kcal/kg for diesel fuel [14]. The surface tension of diesel fuel is also a crucial factor in combustion, affecting its initial stage, fuel atomisation, and spray characteristics.
11 Μαΐ 2011 · Higher heating value (HHV) is probably the most important property of the fuels. Bomb calorimeter and derived empirical formulae are often used for accurate determination of HHV of fuels.
HHV is about 7% higher than LHV for petro-diesel, while, it is 15% higher for H2 due to the higher hydrogen content compared to petro-diesel. Practically, HHV is determined by bomb calorimeter where fuel is combusted with oxygen in a sealed steel container at 25 C [4, 5].
You can use this calculator to obtain the heating value of a given mass or volume of hydrogen or other fuels, or to calculate the mass or volume given a certain heating value. Choose whether you want to convert to heating value or to mass/volume, and then choose the fuel type.
In all, the higher heating value of hydrogen is 18.2% above its lower heating value (142 MJ/kg vs. 120 MJ/kg). For hydrocarbons, the difference depends on the hydrogen content of the fuel. For gasoline and diesel the higher heating value exceeds the lower heating value by about 10% and 7%, respectively, and for natural gas about 11%.
