18 Δεκ 2023 · From the ancient world to the present day, the evolution of military ranks has been shaped by a variety of factors, including social structure, cultural norms, and the demands of combat. In ancient times, military leadership was often based on social status and birthright.
The military rank system defines dominance, authority and responsibility within a military hierarchy. It incorporates the principles of exercising power and authority into the military chain of command —the succession of commanders superior to subordinates through which command is exercised.
In 1940 Nazi Germany, Hermann Göring was promoted by Adolf Hitler to Reichsmarschall, the highest rank in the armed forces of Nazi Germany during World War II (after the position of supreme commander, which was held by Hitler himself). Göring was the only person to hold this rank in modern times.
