HighScope uses the term scaffolding to describe the process whereby adults support and gently extend children’s thinking and reasoning. Adults fi rst validate, or support, what children already know, and then, when the time is right, gently encourage them to extend their thinking to the next level.
HighScope and comparison classrooms differed significantly in classroom environment, daily routine, adult-child interaction, and overall quality of implementation, as assessed by the HighScope Program Implementation Profile (a precursor of the PQA; HighScope, 1989) adapted for generic use.
