30 Οκτ 2023 · This article will review the embryology of the bone marrow as well as its histology. Additionally, the constituent cell lineages and their function will be discussed, together with clinically relevant processes and pathologies.
1 Μαΐ 2023 · Light microscopy of bone marrow aspirates is generally done using H and E staining. Erythropoiesis under light microscopy demonstrates the spectrum of red cell differentiation from proerythroblasts to reticulocytes. The full process of differentiation can take up to 5 days.
It is comprised of hematopoietic cells in various stages of development, supportive reticular connective tissue, and sinusoidal capillaries. Hematopoietic stem cells give rise to red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets (thrombocytes).
The components involved in bone marrow histology are cortical and trabecular bone and stroma, vasculature, sinus wall layers, nerves, hematopoietic cells, and non-hematopoietic interstitial cells. Depending on need, the bone marrow microenvironment and growth factors influence pluripotent stem cells to differentiate into committed stem cells of either the myeloid or lymphoid series (multipotential stem cells), or the second stage of hematopoiesis.

Similar to blood smears, the histology of developing blood cells is studied in bone marrow smears prepared by spreading a small amount of bone marrow into a thin layer on a microscope slide. This separates the individual cells so their morphology can be more easily examined.
