Counseling psychology emerged as a distinctive applied specialty within the American Psychological Association (APA) during the 1940s. Its formal recognition as a specialty by the APA occurred in 1946, marking a pivotal moment in its establishment as a recognized field of expertise.
At the age of 25, he founded the counseling center at Bucknell University and served as director of counseling. Ivey then assumed the role of director of the counseling center at Colorado State University from 1963 to 1968.
To examine the roots of counseling psychology, in this chapter we describe both its establishment as a profession in the 1940s and how the profession has matured over time. Finally, we describe the continuities and changes of recent years that have resulted in a vigorous profession of counseling psychology for the 21st century and beyond.
