Career counseling, or vocational guidance as it was originally known, has a long history within the counseling professions. Career counseling was born in the United States in the latter 19th century out of societal upheaval, transition, and change.
To examine the roots of counseling psychology, in this chapter we describe both its establishment as a profession in the 1940s and how the profession has matured over time. Finally, we describe the continuities and changes of recent years that have resulted in a vigorous profession of counseling psychology for the 21st century and beyond.
