Texans have long been concerned about the education of their children. The Texas Declaration of Independence in 1836 listed the failure of the Mexican government "to establish any public system of education, although possessed of almost boundless resources..."
Public education was one of the primary goals of the early settlers of Texas. As early as 1838, President Mirabeau B. Lamar’s message to the Republic of Texas Congress advocated setting aside public domain for public schools. His interest caused him to be called the “Father of Education in Texas.”
1876 Texas A&M University opened for classes in College Station. 1883 O. M. Roberts, considered the Thomas Jefferson of Texas education, helped pass a constitutional amendment that began the school district system for Texas schools. He was also influential in establishing the University of Texas.
