Emo. Emo / ˈiːmoʊ / is a music genre characterized by emotional, often confessional lyrics. It emerged as a style of hardcore punk and post-hardcore from the mid-1980s Washington, D.C. hardcore scene, where it was known as emotional hardcore or emocore.
Self proclaimed emo bands revive the emo genre, but bring about great changes to it while doing so. The genre loses its visceral qualities for a more poetic, complex and emotional approach that speaks of daily situations like love, heartbreak, depression, and other complex emotions and situations.
