The California Indians are Native Americans who traditionally occupied an area that includes most of the U.S. state of California and the northern part of the Mexican state of Baja California. California tribes included the Chumash, Diegueño, Hupa, Pomo, Yuma, and Yurok.
The Carib, the Aztec, the Maya, the Inca, and other groups lived in the Caribbean, Mesoamerica (Mexico and Central America), and South America. Many other peoples lived in what are now Canada and the United States. These peoples are known as Native Americans or American Indians in the United States.
In the early 21st century California’s native activists worked to improve educational opportunities for native students and to revise teaching materials and the state curriculum to more accurately depict Native American life and culture.
