The breakthrough to the first scientific comparison of Japanese and Korean was accomplished by Aston in his pioneering investiga-tion A Comparative Study of the Japanese and Korean Languages (1879), which contains comparisons of sounds, forms, and words, and which became the point of departure for many further studies.
Korean and Japanese have very different native scripts (Hangul and kana, respectively), although they both make use of Chinese characters to some extent; Kanji still are a core part of modern Japanese orthography, while Hanja were historically used to write Korean.

This chapter outlines the various periods of Japonic and Koreanic language history. It provides approximate dates for each period more or less following traditional divisions while noting issues with conventional dividing lines.
Chapters 2 and 3 illustrate the phonological systems, genealogical backgrounds, typological characteristics, and historical backgrounds upon which native scripts and writing were developed in Korean and Japanese.
