In addition to the provision of the Nigerian Red Cross Act of 1960, Geneva Conventions and additional protocols, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is universal, and the Nigerian Red Cross is one of the 192 National Societies working universally in solidarity with all governments towards the shared mission:
The Nigerian Red Cross Society was established by an Act of Parliament in 1960 and became the 86th Member – National Society of the League of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (Now International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies) on 4 February 1961.
The first proposal led to the establishment of National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, of which there are over 185 recognized by the International red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The second proposal set the stage for the drafting of the four Geneva Conventions of 1949, which are today accepted by all States.
The Nigerian Red Cross Society has its roots in the year 1917, when the country was still under British rule. In that year the British Red Cross for the first time organized a fund-raising event in Lagos.
