In 2021, 650 000 [510 000–860 000] people died from HIV-related causes globally. There were approximately 38.4 million [33.9–43.8 million] people living with HIV (PLHIV) at the end of 2021 with 1.5 million [1.1–2.0 million] people becoming newly infected with HIV in 2021 globally.
Current research (FAO, 2004) shows the impact that HIV and AIDS is having on the Miombo woodlands, a vast ecoregion stretching through some of the African countries with the high-est prevalence of HIV, including Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Key facts HIV. The global HIV epidemic claimed 64% fewer lives in 2020 since its peak in 2004. And fewer people became newly infected with HIV than in any year since 1990. HIV continues to be a major global public health issue, having claimed almost 36.3 million [27.2–47.8 million] lives so far.
People most affected by HIV. Median HIV prevalence among the adult population (ages 15–49) was 0.8% globally. However, because of marginalization, discrimination and in some cases criminalization, median prevalence was higher among certain groups of people.
7 Ιουλ 2024 · • In 2023, 630 000 [500 000–820 000] people died from HIV-related causes globally. Since 2010, HIV-related deaths have been reduced by 51%, from 1.3 million [1.0 million–1.7 million]. The global HIV epidemic claimed 69% fewer lives in 2023 since the peak in 2004. – 76 000 [53 000–110 000] children died from HIV-related causes in 2023.
Every day, 4000 people—including 1100 young people (aged 15 to 24 years)—become infected with HIV. If current trends continue, 1.2 million people will be newly infected with HIV in 2025—three times more than the 2025 target of 370 000 new infections. The human impact of the stalling progress on HIV is chilling.
