However, because of marginalization, discrimination and in some cases criminalization, median prevalence was higher among certain groups of people.
Globally, 39.9 million [36.1–44.6 million] people were living with HIV at the end of 2023. An estimated 0.6% [0.6-0.7%] of adults aged 15–49 years worldwide are living with HIV, although the burden of the epidemic continues to vary considerably between countries and regions.
Infection with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). AIDS results in a gradual and persistent decline and failure of the immune system, resulting in a heightened risk of life-threatening infection and cancers. In the majority of cases, HIV is a sexually transmitted infection.
