Thomas Alva Edison was a late nineteenth and early twentieth century inventor who according to Lisa Simpson invented movies, the light bulb, the phonograph, the microphone, and the electric car. After learning this, Homer Simpson researched Edison extensively.

Homer Jay Simpson, briefly legally changed his name to Max Power,[2] is the father of the Simpson family. He is overweight, lazy, and ignorant, but also strongly devoted to his wife and children.
In the episode, Homer, realizing his life is half over and has not accomplished anything, begins to admire Thomas Edison and decides to create inventions to follow in Edison's footsteps and make his life worthwhile.
Homer is one of the playable characters in The Simpsons Bowling, along with Marge, Bart, Lisa, Mr. Burns, Apu, Krusty, Groundskeeper Willie, and Abe (Grandpa) Simpson. Homer has the most accuracy (along with Willie) of any bowler in the game.
