Hooded Crows, or ‘hoodies’ as they’re affectionately known, stand out with their contrasting grey and black feathers. These birds, part of the Corvus genus, showcase an ashy grey body set against a black head, wings, and tail. You can spot them by their dark brown irises and sleek black beaks.
25 Αυγ 2015 · In Ireland they are common in a wide variety of habitats, including open country with scattered trees and rocky crags, moorland, inland and coastal cliffs, open woodlands, forest margins and mountains areas. They’re also commonly seen in parks and large gardens in our towns and cities.
Widely distributed, it is found across Northern, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe, as well as parts of the Middle East. It is an ashy grey bird with black head, throat, wings, tail, and thigh feathers, as well as a black bill, eyes, and feet. Like other corvids, it is an omnivorous and opportunistic forager and feeder.
These tiny little birds migrate to West Africa in the winter, and return to a number of out-of-the-way sand and shingle beaches around the Irish coast to try and raise their young. As seabirds that rely on a diet of fish, they’re excellent ecosystem indicators to give us an idea of what goes on beneath the waves.
