The hooded seal or bladdernose seal (Cystophora cristata) is a large phocid found only in the central and western North Atlantic, ranging from Svalbard in the east to the Gulf of St. Lawrence in the west.

The hooded seal is a relatively large seal, famous for its balloon-like nasal appendage. It has a small head, reaches up to 2.5 m in length and weighs up to 400 kg. Males are typically longer and heavier than females.
Hooded seals are generally found from 47° to 80° N latitude. They occur along the eastern coast of North America north of Maine. Hooded seals also reach the western tip of Europe, along the coast of Norway. They are mainly concentrated around Bear Island, Norway, Iceland, and northeast Greenland.
