The USS Indianapolis Memorial (CA-35) opened on August 2, 1995, along the east bank of a canal in downtown Indianapolis, the namesake for the ship. The event marked the 50th anniversary of the heavy cruiser's tragic sinking by a Japanese submarine at the end of World War II.
Fourteen minutes after midnight on 30 July 1945, two torpedoes from a Japanese submarine hit the USS Indianapolis (CA-35). Fires blazed, the ship took on water as she steamed ahead, men leaped overboard. The heavy cruiser capsized and sank quickly, in about 12 minutes.
24 Ιουλ 2018 · This month marks the 73rd anniversary of the U.S. Navy’s second-most-deadly warship loss of World War II: the July 30, 1945, sinking of heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis (CA-35) by a Japanese submarine.
Survivors floated for days before it was realized that the ship was lost. Out of the crew of nine hundred who survived the sinking, only 316 survived the following days floating in the shark-infested Pacific waters with negligible food and no water.
