This Instructable will demonstrate how you can build your own hot wire cutter, able to slice through foam, cardboard and even plexiglass! Step 1: How Does a Hot Wire Cutter Work? A hot wire cutter works by a wire, often nichrome or in my case kanthal wire, which is heated via electrical resistance.
After doing some quick research, it became apparent that a nichrome wire could be made hot enough to vaporize the plastic, and was easily available in extremely thin diameters. I've deemed this project a "vocutter", or Vaporization On Contact, (VOC) Cutter because of this cutting method.

The optional system automatically cuts the end of the stretch wrap after pallet wrapping by drawing a heated metal wire through the plastic film, then conceals the wire for quick cooling.
The electric console features a constantly heated, low voltage cutting wire to cut the film before sealing the bottom of the tray on the stainless steel hot plate. The hotplate features adjustable temperature settings.
