In 1760 l’Eppe founded the first free public sign language school in the world, funded by his own inheritance. The school was called Institution Nationale des Sourds-Muets à Paris (The Royal Institution of Deaf-Mutes).
ASL emerged as a language in the American School for the Deaf (ASD), founded by Thomas Gallaudet in 1817, [7]: 7 which brought together Old French Sign Language, various village sign languages, and home sign systems. ASL was created in that situation by language contact.
In 1965, A Dictionary of American Sign Language described signs of the language and led others to study deaf people’s sign language around the world. Symbols were used to identify placement, handshape, and movement of signs.
ASL’s origins trace back to the early 19th century. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a derivative of English or any spoken language. Its roots can be found in the confluence of local sign languages and French Sign Language (LSF), brought to America by Laurent Clerc, a deaf educator.
