The story of the CD started way back in 1957 with experiments involving the rudimentary video disc by the Italian Antonio Rubbiani, that stimulated an entire generation of scientists to think along the lines of digital technology.
In later years, the compact disc was adapted for non-audio computer data storage purposes as CD-ROM and its derivatives. First released in Japan in October 1982, the CD was the second optical disc technology to be invented, after the much larger LaserDisc (LD).
In 1976 Phillips and Sony developed the compact disc (CD), an optical disc used to store and playback digital data. It was originally developed to store and playback sound recordings exclusively. CDs can hold up to 700 megabytes. This equates to up to 80 minutes of uncompressed audio. By 2007 200 billion CDs were sold worldwide.
10 Μαΐ 2021 · The first prototype was revealed in 1979, and in 1982, CDs were made available to the public. They could hold about 80 minutes of music and were more durable than vinyl records and more convenient than cassette tapes, since they allowed you to skip directly to the song you wanted to listen to.
The first compact discs and players came out in October of 1982. That means the format is now 40 years old, which in turn means that most avid music-listeners have never known a world without it.
