30 Ιαν 2023 · Evolutionary theory is proving critical for understanding human health and disease, including infections, cancer, and auto-immune diseases (20–22), but attempts to unravel personality and its disorders from this perspective have only just begun (23–25).
In addition to identifying important biological and psychosocial correlates of personality disorders, recent research has illuminated environmental and sociocultural factors that influence the development, expression, and maintenance of personality disorders.
Following a review of our model and how it is maintained by these histories, we provide two examples of avoidant and borderline personality disorders to illustrate our approach that attempts to describe the development and maintenance of personality disorders.

Personality disorder symptoms are calibrated based on Western middle-class cultural norms. Despite this culturally bound derivation of personality disorders, most types of personality disorder are described in most societies, although the evidence beyond antisocial personality disorder is poor.
