7 Φεβ 2006 · The celluloid ball makes a hollow sound that led to "ping-pong" as a common name for the game, although it could not be used officially for some time since it was a registered trademark. It first appeared in the late 19th century as an attempt to miniaturize tennis for play indoors.
The name "ping-pong" was in wide use before British manufacturer J. Jaques & Son Ltd trademarked it in 1901. The name "ping-pong" then came to describe the game played using the rather expensive Jaques's equipment, with other manufacturers calling it table tennis.

This honor instead goes to David Foster. He patented the first table tennis-style game called Parlour Table Games in England in 1890.
