The mitotic activity of breast epithelial cells is very high in the follicular phase but slows in the luteal phase.

Ovarian granulosa cells and theca cells work together to produce estrogen under the influence of FSH and LH. Theca cells are the source of ovarian androgens. High progesterone stimulates endometrial cells to secret prostaglandin, a powerful vasoconstrictor.
Estrogen and progesterone circulate in the bloodstream almost entirely bound to plasma proteins. Only unbound estrogen and progesterone appear to be biologically active. They stimulate the target organs of the reproductive system (eg, uterus, vagina), and the breasts.
Estrogen works through several possible cellular mechanisms to mediate its biological responses as shown in Figure 1. These include two major cellular actions involving the receptors: rapid non-genomic effects and genomic activities (Hewitt et al., 2016).
2 Ιουλ 2018 · Progesterone (P4) is E2’s physiological partner, collaborating with E2 in every cell/tissue; its bone ‘job’ is to increase P4-receptor-mediated, slow (3–4 months) osteoblastic new bone formation. When menstrual cycles are normal length and normally ovulatory, E2 and P4 are balanced and BMD is stable.
