It's much easier and safer for the female to quietly enter and leave the nest alone, and incubate for a few weeks longer, until the babies are strong enough to follow her out of the nest as soon as they hatch.
Most birds leave their nests for a short period to walk around and explore their surroundings. Once they start to grow feathers, they leave for a longer time to stretch their wings and try flying. Once they are confident fliers, juvenile birds will leave the nest for good.

The young will leave the nest in about 14 to 16 days after hatching. Robins will return to the same territories from season to season. Sometimes they build a new nest on top of their old one. I've personally seen as many as three on top of one another. However, Robins do not reuse their nest.
