Air enters through the nose or mouth, journeys down the throat, and reaches the lungs via tubes called bronchi. These bronchi split into smaller tubes, bronchioles, ending in tiny air sacs known as alveoli.

The lungs and respiratory system allow oxygen in the air to be taken into the body, while also letting the body get rid of carbon dioxide in the air breathed out. When you breathe in, the diaphragm moves downward toward the abdomen, and the rib muscles pull the ribs upward and outward.
How do your lungs work? The contraction and relaxation of your diaphragm controls the movement of your lungs. When the diaphragm contracts, it becomes flatter, the pressure in the chest cavity is reduced and the lungs expand resulting in rushing of air into them.
