A note on the separate status of the Wikimedia Endowment. The Wikimedia Endowment, held from 2016 to 2023 by the Tides Foundation and now a standalone 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is not and has never been included in Wikimedia Foundation assets, even though Wikimedia Foundation fundraising staff solicit donations to the Endowment and the Wikimedia Foundation itself made donations to the Endowment.
ANSWER: This is not suddenly happening. Wikipedia has been doing donation drives like this for many years. This may just be the first time you have seen them. The issue is that Wikipedia doesn't want to have ads on their pages to make money.

As of May 2015, the current version of the English Wikipedia article / template / redirect text was about 51 GB uncompressed in XML format. The size of the article text in the English Wikipedia, measured in gigabytes (compressed), grew steadily from 1 GB in 2006 to 9 GB in 2013 to 11.5 GB in 2015 as shown in the chart.
