Wells are classified into four categories according to the method of construction and intended use of the well as defined in the Commonwealth of Virginia's Private Well Regulations (VR 355-34-100, April 1992). Class I and Class II wells are public water supply wells. Class III wells are private wells used as a source for drinking water.

The Code of Virginia §62.1-258 requires that certified water well system providers submit a water well completion report form to DEQ for any private well constructed within a Virginia Groundwater Management Area within 30 days of construction.
