Wells are classified into four categories according to the method of construction and intended use of the well as defined in the Commonwealth of Virginia's Private Well Regulations (VR 355-34-100, April 1992). Class I and Class II wells are public water supply wells. Class III wells are private wells used as a source for drinking water.
Private well owners are responsible for testing the quality of their own drinking water and maintaining their own wells. However, CT Local Health Departments and Districts have authority over private wells in their respective towns for proper siting and approval before construction.
Testing your private well or semipublic well water provides you with information on the quality of your water and is the best way to ensure that your water supply is safe for use. It can also determine if nuisance contaminants, such as iron and manganese are present and at what levels.
Individual behavior can impact ground water quality and consequently, private well water. One must always dispose of hazardous materials and chemicals in an appropriate and safe manner and never on your property which could impact the drinking water aquifer.
No private well shall be placed closer than 50 feet from an unlined bioretention pond or 10 feet from a lined bioretention pond. A Class IV well shall not be converted to a Class III well if the Class III well separation distance is not met.
