If you don’t recall entering a PIN, or you’re being asked to enter a 40-character code to restore your chat history, you can learn about other options to restore your end-to-end encrypted chats on Messenger.
If you’ve stored your Messenger chat history in secure storage but have forgotten your security method (for example, a PIN), you can restore your chats on a new device with a one-time code. This one-time code will be sent to the Messenger app on any of your mobile devices where you’ve recently used Messenger.
You can use an Apple account, Google account, PIN, one-time code or 40-character code to restore your encrypted messages on Messenger.
If you backed up your chats in secure storage from Facebook, you can restore it on a new device with a 40-character recovery code that was generated from a device previously enrolled in secure storage.
