Insulin therapy is the mainstay of treatment for clinical DM. The guidelines provide rec-ommendations for each insulin formulation currently available for use in dogs and cats, the choice of which is generally based on efficacy and duration of effect in the respective species. Doses of insulin are measured in units: 40 IU/ml insulin contains 40 International Units (IU) per millilitre (ml). Use Caninsulin with U-40 syringes only to avoid dosing errors when administering Caninsulin to dogs. Human insulin is formulated at a concentration of 100 IU / ml.
HOW TO CHART YOUR PATIENTS’ GLUCOSE CURVES. Once the patient has been on Vetsulin® (porcine insulin zinc suspension) for 5 to 7 days for dogs or 7 to 14 days for cats, admit the patient either: 1. First thing in the morning before eating and receiving Vetsulin®. 2.Right after the patient eats and receives Vetsulin® at home.
