Change the icon for a file or folder. On your Mac, double-click an image file to open it in the Preview app . Choose Edit > Copy in the menu bar to copy the image to the Clipboard. Select the file or folder whose icon you want to replace. Choose File > Get Info in the menu bar.
You need to replace the ICNS file inside the program that is assigned as the default program for the specific file type. 1 - Create an image for the desired icon, then save as a png filetype (png supports transparency). 2 - Convert the png file to an icns filetype (FastIcns is pretty great and it's free).

However, the .icns files are a 1024x1024 area that come with a sizeable transparent area around the actual icon. When opened in Preview, I can see that the approximate size of the actual icon is 826x826.
