The reading passage explains the concept of an advice column and then lists six questions for an advice columnist.
Advice columns stand out as a good source of teaching materials. They are written as letters using simple, modern spoken English. Since the questions that readers ask the columnists about are volatile, they also offer a wide variety of topics that ESL/EFL students are concerned about.
There’s a formula that we call the “ABCs” that can be used to write compelling op-eds, columns, or blogs. The same formula can also be used to write almost any document that offers up an argument or gives advice. This is a “news flash lede,” a comment that will make sense in a moment.
Many students normally face stress and anxiety during the school year, and summer often provides a much-needed mental break. This summer, however, students are in a sort-of limbo, wondering what the future holds for them in the face of the global pandemic. Your task is to create an advice column.
