NAME: 1) A student measures the mass of an 8 cm3 block of brown sugar to be 12.9 g. What is the density of the brown sugar? 2) A chef fills a 50 mL container with 43.5 g of cooking oil. What is the density of the oil? 3) Calculate the mass of a liquid with a density of 2.5 g/mL and a volume of 15 mL.

Calculate density, and identify substances using a density chart. Density is a measure of the amount of mass in a certain volume. This physical property is often used to identify and classify substances. It is usually expressed in grams per cubic centimeters, or g/cm3.
Density is the amount of matter in a given amount of space, so to calculate density of a substance you need to know two measurements: mass and volume. Mass is a measurement of how much matter is present in something.
Students will learn about measurements and the properties of density, mass and volume, as well as where each can be applied and implemented.
Have students calculate the density of eight different cubes and use the characteristic property of density to correctly identify them. Student groups will not need to measure the volume of the cubes.
Density is simply the amount of "stuff" in a given space. Scientists measure density by dividing the mass of something by its volume (density = mass ÷ volume). The volumes of both cans of soda are the same. To find the mass of the sodas, you would have to use a scale.
