To build and investigate three different classes of lever. Background Information. Simple machine: A basic tool that makes a task easier to do. Lever: A type of simple machine made of a rigid rod that rotates around a fixed pivot point. Fulcrum: Another name for the pivot point of a lever.
Investigation: Levers and linkages Examine linked first- class levers (e.g. pair of scissors, pair of pliers, hedge trimming shears). Examine linked second-class levers (e.g. office punch, bicycle brake calliper, nut crackers).
Make a lever. Learn how to use the sensor & Lab Quest to collect data. Measure the amount of force needed to lift up a book when applying a force at different positions on the lever.
13 Οκτ 2021 · First Class: There are three classes of lever. A first-class lever has the fulcrum in between the effort and the load (e.g. between you and the weight you’re trying to lift). You push down on one end, and the other raises up.
Try out the model and make observations. Try out lever C2. Assess and make a note about the amount of effort needed to move the load. Observe how the difference in length from the pivot to the load affects the amount of effort needed to move the load.
Understand the working principles of a lever. Apply these principles to lift a heavy object with one finger. Identify which variables can be changed when using a lever, and the effect of changing them. NGSS Alignment. This lesson helps students prepare for these Next Generation Science Standards Performance Expectations: 3-5-ETS1-3.
See how levers make lifting easier by using one you create with a ruler, a pencil, and a plastic bag. Activity's uses: Classroom demo or small group exploration. Area(s) of science: Physical Science. Difficulty level: 4. Prep time: <10 minutes.
