Use Spelunker Potions or throw Spelunker Glowsticks if you're unable to find anything of value: they highlight any valuable treasure and ores that are on your screen. Mining Potions and the Ancient Chisel increase mining speed directly.
The fastest and easiest way is to use Obsidian Skin Potions, as you don't need to surround the Hellstone with blocks or move the lava. Furthermore, you can simply jump in one of the many lava lakes for easy access to the Hellstone.
The Shine potion makes you emit light so that you don't need a torch to see, while the Mining Potion helps you by providing 25% faster mining speed. The Spelunker Potion will reveal the treasures around you - completely revealing all ore, treasures, life crystals, and vases in the visible area.
All you need is Antlion Mandibles, Blinkroot, and Bottled Water. Food: Food gives an active boost to mining speed, which stacks well with the above items. The best food buff is Exquisitely Stuffed, which can be easily be obtained from Seafood Dinners, but other fish meals should work as well.

Going in the jungle with spelunker potions is one of the best, but a somewhat dangerous, strategy. In early hardmode the jungle is pretty tough so be careful. It can be useful to use a gravitation potion and walk along the ceiling of the underworld, especially with a spelunker potion.
