Just got hold of an old Mac, but don't know the password? Need to wipe a Mac before you sell it? Here's how to reset a Mac even if you don't have the password.

Type passwd username and replace “username” with the short name of the user account for which you’d like to reset the password.

Erase and reinstall macOS on an Intel-based Mac without the Apple T2 Security Chip. You can use macOS Recovery, the built-in recovery system on your Mac, to erase and reinstall macOS. Choose Apple menu > Restart, then immediately press and hold Command-R.
To do this, reboot and hold down Command and the 'r' key at the same time. Launch a terminal and enter resetpassword. This will launch a window. From there, you can choose what user you want to reset the password for (including root, if you've enabled root).
