Click on the settings cog (top right) and go to See all settings. Navigate to Labels and from the Show in label list column select show for every folder that you want to keep in the side panel. You also have the option to show a folder only if it contains unread emails.
My gmail used to show the folders on left (Inbox, Sent, Compose, etc) at all times with the list of messages on right. Now when I open a message, the folders disappear
